I got sick before anyone knew the air was toxic.

For years I thought something was wrong with me. The migraines started in business school and got worse as I climbed — eight years at American Express, seven at Discover Financial Services. I medicated them down to a background hum and kept going, because that's what you do.

Turns out I was the canary in the coal mine.

Now I coach senior leaders in midlife who are still performing at a high level and running on empty. Most arrive saying some version of the same thing. I'm just exhausted. I don't know what's next. I want to feel like myself again. What they usually mean is that they've been carrying more than anyone has counted, for longer than they've admitted.

I work with the whole load — the job, everything else with their name on it, and the wider field none of it happens outside of. Most approaches pick one and treat it as the whole story.

My doctoral research at Saybrook became a dissertation called The Stories We Tell Ourselves: How Leaders Can Work with Sensecrafting — about how we assemble our situations out of attention, prior experience, and stories we've stopped hearing as stories. The model I built from that research has been part of my work ever since.

I've been a writer as long as I've been anything else. A Substack is coming soon.

PhD in Organizational Systems from Saybrook, MBA from Duke, psychology degree from Carleton. Coaching professionally since 2015. I've worked with leaders from Google, Disney, Ford, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and the US Army and Air Force.
